Korduroy.tv creator, Cyrus Sutton about the state of the independant surf film
Filmmaking is an art. An art that can be executed only if there's money behind it to support it's own production. The math is simple: No MONEY = no film. Then, there is another factor: TIME. Unless you have the budget to pay somebody, without time to invest into a film project you are going nowhere. The last ingredient is probably the most important: PASSION. With Passion, you can do magic tricks and suddenly find the MONEY and the TIME in very creative ways.
However, what we really see nowadays is those individuals who start making their own art... for their own social networks and close friends. They wish to be seen but it's not a necessity and certainly not by everybody. They target a super specific audience who will appreciate what they do as an art. Thanks to the web again that allows to share within targeted niche circles: Vimeo for those who film, Instagram for those who snap pictures, etsy for those who craft, Wordpress for those who write, soundcloud for those who make music... etc-etc
Gotsurf is no exception... we started as a close circle. No Sponsors. No help. Just Individuals who can't live without some sort of expression of what they do. Individuals who are passionate. Some join in, some others left, some are just passing by to say hello, some hate us and some others just find us inspiring and have a good time visiting us. Just like friends.
There's one thing that allow us to do what we do. The access to great technology for cheap. Without it, we couldn't do what we do. We are projecting a massive boom in independent surf films and media.
Some say that it's the end of the surf films. Well we say, embrace it, log in and enjoy the show.
Here's a short made with the new Iphone 4S - Very impressive:
