Hand Boards or "Hand Planes" Have been in my quiver for the past 5 years.
We first started to make these little things on a beach in Mexico. A couple too many flat days in a row and a creative mind was all it took. My good friend Yohan Chateaux was the first to get into it. He spent hours shaping the first one and within a couple days was in the water and getting the most amazing rides with his body and his hand board. We were all jealous and needed one.
The principle behind them is to get enough lift off your hand to get your head and a bit of your torso out of the water opening up all the clear tube views one can handle also really driving off your hand and increasing you travel time. They are also a great tool to get more comfortable in the water swimming with waves and taking beatings. I cant even tell you how many times i have been sitting in the lineup and herd someone say. "man i sure hope my leash doesn't break i'm not a very good swimmer" . To me that is one of the most important things one should be before getting into surfing. A good swimmer.
These boards are a good introduction to the ocean. You're ability to read waves, your ability to be relaxed in turbulent water, understanding the hydrodynamics of waves and currents, feeling them spin as you swim close to them underwater. Its a toy everyone should have in the quiver.
Hand Boards are nothing but fun……..
